About this song
"Rooster" was the fourth single from the album Dirt and was the highest-charting single from it in the US, reaching #7 on the rock chart in 1993. Jerry Cantrell, the Alice in Chains guitarist, wrote the song.
What it's about
The song is written for Cantrell's father, Jerry Cantrell Sr., who was known by the nickname "Rooster" from childhood and served with the U.S. Army in the Vietnam War. Cantrell has said the nickname came from how his father's hair stood up as a youth.
