About this song
Guitarist Lee Pickens said the song came from an incident he witnessed as a teenager. The band chose to write a song about it, and it appeared on their sophomore album. It peaked at number 36 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1971, though many radio stations and high schools in the United States banned it over its content.
What it's about
The song is based on a plane crash Pickens saw, in which a friend took off from a small airport, rolled and went down shortly after leaving the ground.
