About this song
Written in 1968 by Mark James, the song was first performed by B.J. Thomas. This version by Blue Swede, which features the "Ooga Chaka" intro, was based on a 1971 cover by Jonathan King, and Blue Swede's lyrics were slightly changed to remove any hint of drug use. The song was a US Billboard Hot 100 number one hit, and Billboard later ranked it as the 20th biggest song of 1974. It has also appeared in the Marvel film Guardians of the Galaxy and in Quentin Tarantino's Reservoir Dogs, and it was the background music of the Dancing Baby meme.
