About this song
Songwriter Desmond Child had first written a song called "If You Were a Woman (And I Was a Man)" for Bonnie Tyler, but was unhappy with its chart performance. He brought the music to Bon Jovi, and the band rewrote it as "You Give Love A Bad Name". The song was released as the first single from the album Slippery When Wet and became Bon Jovi's first of four No. 1 hits on the Billboard Hot 100. It also reached the top 30 in several countries overseas, including the UK. In 2009, VH1 named it the 20th greatest hard rock song of all time.
