About this song

Released in 1978, "Rasputin" is a euro disco hit by the German-based group Boney M. and serves as the second track on their album Nightflight to Venus. It was built on a tune that resembles the second half of the Turkish folk song "Kâtibim". The song was popular in the USSR and is credited with reviving Rasputin's fame there, although it was left off the Soviet pressing of the album and the group was barred from performing it during their ten Moscow shows in December 1978.

What it's about

The song is a semi-biographical take on Grigori Rasputin, an adviser to Tsar Nicholas II of Russia and his family in the early 20th century. It portrays him as a playboy, a mystical healer and a political manipulator.
