About this song
"Cake by the Ocean" is the debut single by DNCE and the lead single from the band's debut EP SWAAY, released in October 2015. It also appears on their self-titled debut studio album, released in November 2016. The track premiered on New York radio station Z100 and on Complex on September 14, 2015, and Jonas called it a breakthrough for the band.
What it's about
The song is playful, with lead singer Joe Jonas singing about getting wild in a romantic relationship through cake-related references, which double as slang for suggestive lyrics. The title came from a quote by producers Mattman & Robin, who were referring to the drink "Sex on the Beach".
