About this song
The song was the theme to the 1980 film Nine to Five, which starred Parton alongside Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin. Its basic rhythm was inspired by the sound of Parton's fingernails rubbed together, and that sound was recorded and featured in the song. It reached number one on the country charts and, in February 1981, on the pop and adult-contemporary charts, making it a triple-number-one hit. It also received an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song and won two Grammys.
What it's about
The song is tied to the film's story of gender inequality in the workplace. It has remained a workers' anthem.
