About this song

Grace Slick wrote the song while she was still in her earlier band, The Great Society, and offered it to Jefferson Airplane after joining them in 1966, during the recording of the album Surrealistic Pillow. It became the band's second biggest hit, reaching #8 on the pop charts. Its march tempo and instrumentation were influenced by Spanish bolero music and by Miles Davis's 1960 album Sketches of Spain.

What it's about

The song uses imagery from Alice in Wonderland to describe the surreal effects of hallucinogenic drugs. Slick also saw it as a metaphor for her escape from the outdated rules of society.
