About this song
The Guess Who originally recorded "American Woman" in 1970. Lenny Kravitz covered it in 1999, and his version appeared on the soundtrack to "Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me." His take is slower and softer than the original, and it leaves out the signature guitar solo because he said he couldn't get the sound and tone he wanted. His cover peaked at #49 on the Billboard Hot 100 and reached #7 on the Modern Rock Tracks chart, and it won a Grammy for Best Male Rock Performance.
