About this song
The song grew in popularity through many TikTok memes, with clips using the hashtag #oldtownroad garnering millions of views. After it was removed from Billboard's Country charts, Lil Nas X released a remix with Billy Ray Cyrus, and the original later reached number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 on April 8, 2019. Both versions credit Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross of Nine Inch Nails for sampling their track "34 Ghosts IV."
What it's about
The song romanticizes the life of a cowboy who feels unfulfilled by a hedonistic life of consumerism, substance abuse, and adultery. Disillusioned with his peers and with nothing left to believe in, the rider heads out toward the open road.
