About this song
Angel is the opening track of Massive Attack's third album Mezzanine and samples Lost Bongo in Belgium by The Incredible Bongo Band. It began as a planned cover of The Clash's Straight To Hell, with Horace Andy lined up as vocalist. When Andy refused to sing the word hell, the group improvised a new song in the studio in about four hours, halving the tempo and reworking the track, and took its lyrics almost directly from Andy's own song You Are My Angel.
