About this song
The song was released as a single in February 1991, ahead of the album Out of Time, where it was the second track. It became R.E.M.'s biggest hit, reaching #4 on the Billboard pop chart and #1 on the Mainstream Rock and Modern Rock charts. It also charted in 14 countries, reached #1 in Belgium and the Netherlands, and won a Grammy for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group.
What it's about
Despite its title, the song has nothing to do with religion, according to lyricist Michael Stipe, who says it is about doubt, obsession and unrequited love. Stipe was inspired by The Police's "Every Breath You Take" and has said the song can be heard as being about the relationship between the band and its audience.
