About this song
John Cooper said he was inspired to write the song after a line from the 2008 movie The Incredible Hulk, in which Hulk's adversary is asked how he feels and answers "Like a monster". The song reached the top 5 on the Christian Rock, Mainstream Rock and Active Rock charts. In 2016, the Gospel Music Association named it the Biggest Digital Single in Christian Music History.
What it's about
Cooper has described the song as being about pretending to be someone you are not and putting on a face for others. It explores the gap between the public image a person shows and who they really are.
