About this song
The song opens Taylor Swift's album The Life of a Showgirl and directly references Ophelia, the tragic heroine of Shakespeare's Hamlet. Swift has also referenced Shakespeare elsewhere in her career, including a line from All Too Well that echoes the title of another Shakespeare play.
What it's about
The song draws a comparison between Ophelia's descent into instability and drowning and Swift's own life. Those themes are read as metaphors for heartbreak, fragility, and loss of agency.
