The Offspring
The song was released to US radio on October 6, 1998, as the lead single from the band's fifth studio album, Americana, and first came out on CD in Europe on November 9, 1998. It received significant pop, rock and alternative radio play, peaking at number 53 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 3 on the Modern Rock Tracks chart. It topped the charts in nine countries, including Australia, where it went four times platinum, and the United Kingdom, making it one of the band's most commercially successful singles.
The lyrics poke fun at a wannabe gangster, mocking white suburban guys from places like Omaha who act as if they grew up in Compton. Frontman Dexter Holland describes the posturing as fake and obvious, an attempt to manufacture an identity.
