The Presidents Of The United States Of America
Chris Ballew, the band's bassist and lead vocalist, came up with the song while cleaning his room and listening to a mixtape of his own recordings. He had sung the song's outro on one of those recordings and wrote the song around that line. Conrad Uno, the producer on the album version, suggested muting the guitars at the start of the track, and the song gained further exposure when Weird Al Yankovic parodied it as "Gump", a song about Forrest Gump.
The song takes its title and central line from a half-remembered phrase Ballew found on a tape, asking whether a lump is out of his head.
