About this song
The Smiths released "This Charming Man" as their second single. It was included as a bonus track on the cassette version of the band's debut album, and later on all American versions of that album, including streaming releases.
What it's about
The song tells of a poor boy who meets an upper class man and feels unwelcome because he lacks material wealth. The ambiguity of the two characters' sexuality leaves the song open to debate, with some pointing towards a homosexual relationship between them.
