About this song
The song was written by Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong and produced by Whitfield. It was released as a single on January 14, 1971, reached #1 on both the pop and R&B charts, and later appeared on the album Sky's The Limit that year. It was the last Temptations single to feature Eddie Kendricks and Paul Williams, both members since the group's start in 1957, and it returned to the group's earlier love-ballad style rather than their psychedelic soul sound. The Rolling Stones later recorded their own version for the 1978 album Some Girls.
