About this song
"On Hold" is The xx's first single since their 2012 album Coexist. It is also the first music from any of the band members since Jamie xx's 2015 album In Colour, which featured all three members on different tracks.
What it's about
The song compares a relationship to a phone call on hold, where one person waits to see if the call will resume. The narrator had hoped their lover would wait until things were steady enough to continue, but the relationship ended instead.
