About this song
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers recorded the song on July 22, 1993, during the sessions for Petty's Wildflowers album, and it was produced by Rick Rubin, Mike Campbell and Tom Petty. It was the last session to feature drummer Stan Lynch before he left in 1994. The song first appeared on the Greatest Hits album in 1993, reached No. 14 on the Billboard Hot 100, and topped the Billboard Album Rock Tracks chart for two weeks. Campbell has said it was originally titled "Indiana Girl" before Rubin asked for the change.
What it's about
Campbell has said the song can mean whatever listeners want, and that while some hear a drug reference, it could also be a goodbye love song.
