About this song
"Step" was inspired by "Step to My Girl" by Souls of Mischief, a line the frontman discovered years after first hearing the group as a teenager. The song was recorded around the time of Souls of Mischief's first album but never made the record and circulated as a bootleg for a while. The official lyrics video shows New York scenes in black and white, recalling the opening of Woody Allen's Manhattan.
What it's about
The narrator rejects the dense, knotty lyrical style of the band's earlier songs in favor of deeper, more primitive truths. The song builds around the phrase about stepping to someone's girl.
