About this song
The song was released amid ongoing political and cultural turmoil. Its music video was directed by Hiro Murai, a frequent collaborator of Gambino. The release coincided with Gambino's appearance on Saturday Night Live, where he performed it alongside another new track, and it was his first single since the 2016 album Awaken, My Love!.
What it's about
The song is presented as a commentary on Black life in America and American culture as a whole, contrasting cheerful pop-culture choruses with darker, aggressive verses. Its video suggests that a nation willfully ignoring its problems risks its own downfall.
