About this song

Billie Joe Armstrong wrote the song after a break-up with a girlfriend who moved to Ecuador. He said he tried to stay level-headed about her leaving even though he was angry, which is why he gave it the title. The song was first presented to the band during the Dookie sessions, but it didn't fit that record, and it later appeared on Nimrod, where it became Green Day's first ballad and drew criticism from some longtime fans.

What it's about

The narrator seems to be saying goodbye to a relationship, but the sarcasm hides a mature acceptance of the break-up and of moving on. The song is about broken hearts and missed chances rather than happiness, and Armstrong has said it also reflects the bonds formed with friends during high school.
