The song is the only one on American Idiot that has no direct connection to the album's story arc. It was originally meant for the band's Shenanigans project, but Billie Joe Armstrong wasn't emotionally ready to record it, so it was placed on American Idiot instead.

Billie Joe Armstrong wrote the song about his father, who died of cancer on September 1st, 1982. The title is said to come from something Armstrong told his mother at age 10, after locking himself in his room following the funeral.
