About this song
The band's usual setlist opener, except on the Chinese Democracy tour, when the title song took that spot. It is also a staple at many sports events. Axl wrote the lyrics while visiting his longtime friend Tori in Kingston, Washington, a town outside Seattle, and he wrote about how the place looked to him. The song's opening lines are said to have come from a homeless man Axl and a friend heard after stepping off a bus in New York.
What it's about
The song is a hard-hitting ode to a wild place that can tear anyone apart. It describes a town where people can find whatever they want, but where newcomers have to learn to survive.
