About this song
"Washing Machine Heart" is the twelfth track on Mitski's album Be the Cowboy. The song is upbeat in its sound, and its heavy backbeat may represent the clatter of a washing machine and the racing thrum of the heart.
What it's about
The lyrics explore a manic protagonist who feels powerless and overcompensates by exerting extreme control over herself and her surroundings. Beneath that strong front is something warmer and more human that she keeps pushing down to appear strong to the world.
