About this song
Smith wrote the song with Jimmy Napes and Tourist in a London studio in Old Street, and the rest of the track took only 30 to 40 minutes to write once Tourist played the first three chords. After release, the song drew comparisons to Tom Petty's 1989 hit "I Won't Back Down," and Smith's team agreed to give Petty co-writing credit, with Petty saying he held no ill feelings. The song reached number one in countries including the United States, Canada and Ireland, and won two Grammy awards.
What it's about
The song finds Smith longing for a lasting relationship after a one-night stand leaves them wanting more.
