About this song
"Linger" was on the original demo that got The Cranberries signed in 1990, but the record label waited until 1993 to release it as a single, after a 1991 EP and the single "Dreams" in 1992. It became a top 40 hit in five countries after MTV added the video into rotation in late 1993 while the band was touring with Suede, and it launched the band to international stardom in 1994. It is the band's only top 10 hit and their only gold-selling single in the US.
What it's about
Dolores O'Riordan has said the song was written about her first boyfriend and about being heartbroken by a love affair in which she was rejected. The music was written before she joined the band, and her lyrics replaced the earlier ones written by the group's previous vocalist.
