MASSA

About this song

Tyler uses the era of slavery in the United States, which ran from the nation's founding in 1776 until the Thirteenth Amendment in 1865, as a reference point. The song's title and chorus use the word "massa" as a nod to how enslaved African Americans of that era pronounced "master".

What it's about

The song contrasts the constraints faced by African Americans in the 18th and 19th centuries with the success Black men such as Tyler have built in modern America, while suggesting that the racism that era created still lingers. The second verse argues that wealth and success mean little without love, security and friendship.
