About this song
Bernie Taupin wrote the words to most of Elton John's biggest songs. The lyrics started out about Taupin's life as a single man in Los Angeles, but by the time he finished, he was dating Maxine Feibelman, his future first wife, and he reframed the song around her.
What it's about
The song is a love song addressed to Taupin's partner, Maxine Feibelman, even though it began as a song about his single life in Los Angeles.
