About this song
The song was built from lines Kanye West had been working on for a while, which first appeared on his debut mixtape Get Well Soon.. in a track called "Home." For "Homecoming," he swapped the soul sample for a looped piano, replaced the earlier hook with one sung by Chris Martin of Coldplay, and re-recorded the original verse as two separate verses.
What it's about
Using an extended metaphor, the song compares Kanye's feelings for his home city of Chicago to those for a lost girlfriend. It interpolates a line from Common's "I Used To Love H.E.R."
