About this song
According to drummer Chad Channing, Cobain did not have a title for the song when he first brought it to the studio around the time of Bleach. Cobain wrote it after spending the previous night listening to The Beatles' first US album, Meet The Beatles, over and over. Nirvana later opened their MTV Unplugged in NY session with it.
What it's about
The song is about Tracy Marander, Cobain's girlfriend at the time, and the strain in their relationship caused by his refusal to get a job or share cleaning duties at their apartment. Marander was never told the song was written for her, and only learned of it after reading a book about the band.
