About this song
"Hey Ya!" is the first single from André 3000's half of OutKast's double album Speakerboxxx/The Love Below. André wrote it with the Aretha Franklin song "Say A Little Prayer" in mind, since its looping structure and time signature inspired the track. The music video, directed by Bryan Barber, recreates The Beatles' 1964 Ed Sullivan Show performance, with André playing all the band members, and it won Video of the Year at the 2004 BET Awards, Soul Train Music Awards and MTV Video Music Awards. The single reached #1 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and several other pop charts, and it won a Grammy for Best Urban/Alternative Performance.
What it's about
André has said the song is about the state of relationships in the 2000s, particularly couples who stay together out of tradition and end up unhappy. He described it as a humorous, honest take set in the 1950s, inspired by fantasies and tangents rather than his own life.
