About this song
The second single from the album Stankonia, it brought the Southern rap duo OutKast into the mainstream, reaching the top 5 in several countries and becoming their first of three #1 songs on the Billboard Hot 100. It won the Grammy for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group in 2002. André and Big Boi drew on personal experiences to write it, and André said it grew out of his relationship with singer Erykah Badu. Badu later admitted the song was a sore spot for her, though her mother embraced being its inspiration.
What it's about
The song imagines how the parent of a girl who has a child feels about the situation after a relationship has gone wrong. It was inspired by André's own experiences with Erykah Badu.
