About this song
"Black" is a central emotional piece on Pearl Jam's album Ten and became one of the band's best-known songs. Despite pressure from Epic Records, the band refused to release it as a single, feeling it was too personal and that its feeling would be lost through a video or single release. Vedder personally called radio station managers to make sure Epic had not released it as a single against his wishes. Even so, the song reached number three on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks chart and number 20 on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart in 1993.
