Paul McCartney originally called the song "Hey Jules" and wrote it to comfort John Lennon's son Julian during his parents' divorce. When recording, producer George Martin objected to its length of over seven minutes, but Lennon insisted radio would play it because it was the Beatles. The song became the longest single to top the British charts in its day and spent nine weeks at number one in the United States, the Beatles' best-performing American single.
The song offers reassurance to a young boy going through his parents' divorce, encouraging him to take courage and find his way. It is widely regarded by critics as one of the greatest songs ever written.
