In The Night

About this song

The song was partly inspired by Marilyn Monroe, and The Weeknd came up with its concept in her former bedroom, in a studio that used to be her house. The Weeknd has also said the song was made as a homage to Michael Jackson, and when music publisher Ron Perry first heard it, he reacted with excitement, comparing it to Jackson's 'Billie Jean'. The New York Times described it as the most electric moment on the album Kiss Land.

What it's about

The song follows a survivor of childhood sexual abuse, even though its tempo is upbeat. It draws a parallel with Marilyn Monroe, who was also abused as a child and later spoke publicly about it.
