About this song
Released on May 3, 2015, "Lane Boy" was the fourth single from Twenty One Pilots' album Blurryface. Tyler Joseph described it in an interview with Alternative Press as the moment he broke character and said things he felt, even though they weren't especially artistic. Josh was the one who encouraged him to keep the lines in when others were hesitant.
What it's about
The song deals with the tension of being a commercial artist and the fear of being called a sellout for promoting records. It explores that tension, in line with the album's focus on musical integrity.
