This Ain't A Scene, It's An Arms Race

About this song

The band chose this track as the first single from its album over other songs considered more radio-friendly, including two with contributions from producer Babyface, because it had the right message. It topped the Billboard Pop Songs chart, peaked at No. 2 on the Hot 100, and was certified Platinum by the RIAA. It also topped the New Zealand singles chart and reached No. 2 in the UK.

What it's about

The song uses wartime metaphors, including an arms dealer image inspired by the film Lord of War, to express frustration with the growing emo scene. It is also read as a comment on artists who make music purely for money and fame rather than for fun.
