About this song
Rodrigo said in her film Driven Home 2 U that she wrote the song the day before she and her partner broke up. The song slightly interpolates Taylor Swift's 2017 track New Year's Day and shares some main concepts with Swift's Dear John. The title changes the usual saying to three steps back, a nod to Swift's favorite number, 13.
What it's about
The song explores the ups and downs of life and the difficulty of being in a relationship with an inconsistent partner. Each time she moves toward the love she wants, she feels pushed back from her goals.
