About this song
Released a week after the promotional single "The Heart Part 4", the track's music video was directed by Dave Meyers and The Little Homies and mixes religious imagery with urban life. The beat, built on a deep piano riff and a heavy 808 bass line, departs from the jazz-influenced sound of Kendrick's earlier album To Pimp a Butterfly. The song debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 on April 22, 2017, and later reached No. 1 on June 5, 2017, Lamar's first solo chart-topper.
What it's about
The song's ironically boastful tone challenges his competitors, while its chorus contrasts that bragging with the idea of humility. It may also echo James 4:7, which urges humbling oneself before God.
