About this song
Kendrick Lamar wrote the song as a collaboration with U2, which he said came together after a different record they had been planned to work on. He reached out to Bono to use the idea he had built around a particular 808 and drum sound, and Bono was open to it. The track was released on the album DAMN.
What it's about
The song is a transitional moment on DAMN., in which Kendrick questions American hypocrisy and considers what he would do to protect his family. In its first verse, a friend asks him for advice after the death of his son, and he pushes the friend toward violent revenge.
