About this song
The song peaked at No. 7 on the Hot 100. Steve Porcaro of Toto and John Bettis wrote it, not Jackson, and his breathy vocals and gossamer harmonies capture its mood.
What it's about
The song expresses anticipation of breaking out, hitting the streets and connecting with strangers. In retrospect, the text suggests, it reads as a sad song, since that freedom was denied to Jackson for much of his later life due to the fame generated by Thriller.
