About this song
Kendrick Lamar worked with director Colin Tilley on an extended music video for the song, released June 30, 2015. The song won Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Song at the 58th Grammy Awards in 2016, where it had been nominated for four awards. During the 2015 summer of protest, Black Lives Matter activists chanted its refrain at rallies, and some people on Twitter suggested it could serve as a new black national anthem.
What it's about
The song offers hope after the burdens laid out on the preceding track, "u". Kendrick says that trusting in God helps him look past his failures, and that through solidarity, things will be alright, even amid the pain of police brutality.
