About this song
Kendrick previewed the first two verses of the song on a freestyle with Big Boy on 92.3 FM. The track samples Sufjan Stevens' "All For Myself," and George Clinton, who was featured on "Wesley's Theory," called it his favorite song on the album.
What it's about
The song has Kendrick looking back at himself as a child or teenager, before he had the knowledge he has now, and returns to a time when the hood was all he knew. It follows "Momma" as a contrast, since that song was about how he had forgotten what life in the hood was like. The second verse touches on American politics and the third on the rap industry, drawing on the reaction to his "Control" verse.
