Eminem said he recorded the song in the studio at Dr. Dre's house, after Dre had made the beat first. Eminem had started a rhyme the night before and fit it to the track, then wrote the rest of the song in the studio. The hook's key line came from Mel-Man, and it was one of the first three songs Eminem made with Dre when they began working together.
