About this song
Eminem's song was intended as a message to fans who had written him disturbing letters, taking the violent lyrics of The Slim Shady LP seriously. Eminem also wrote it to answer critics who said he lacked talent and relied on shock value. The song was listed at #15 on VH1's Top 100 Hip Hop Songs of All Time, and the word "stan" was later entered into the Oxford Dictionary as an informal noun.
What it's about
The song is told through correspondence with a crazed fan who becomes increasingly unhinged as the story progresses. In a later follow-up, "Bad Guy", Stan's younger brother Matthew avenges his death.
